It happened in the first week of December and I spent my last working week in following up properly with materials and links, and clearing urgent backlogged tasks. Never has a week appeared so short! That you are not an imposter. These ahisperer, I teach classes, convene intensives, and run multi-part programs all the time. My view is that impostor syndrome would go away in a generation if we a did more on-site written exams with not aides and b graded students on a curve.

As all of this was about to spill forth in a vain attempt to allay your doubts, I stopped. That you are strong, gracious, and generous. And I slowly picked up the PhD.

On a personal note, I loved that so many people picked up the guinea pig reference and ran with it! I remember Deborah Bird Rose saying that academia needed to talk about love a bit more. Now is the time you have to write proposals and pitches to publishers or industry. Writers must learn to live with a great deal of uncertainty and vulnerability. Whispereer a while I do believe the problem was that my goals were too ambitious, but for the past few months I have worked on making more reasonable goals.

I had the good fortune recently to work with you in an academic training workshop. Belittling words are frequently shared about that researcher who won that grant or fellowship. I have been constantly afraid since the end of my third year 8 or 9 months now. Surely on average, perceptions of capacity should be correct.

I realise that life continues regardless of PhD deadlines, and have been immensely grateful for the support of those around me, including the university. Perhaps I need to stop thinking of my PhD as Everest and start comparing it to symdrome guinea pig Valentino.

Belinda is in the final stages of her PhD researching the experience of choice for older spousal caregivers. Not that I felt ready for it.
